    Apostrophe Welcomes Anaïs and Dax

Apostrophe is excited to announce the addition of dynamic duo, Anaïs & Dax, to our roster -- formerly known as Young & Hungry. After meeting each other in Los Angeles, the pair combined their mutual passion for photography to create a beautiful portfolio of  foodlifestyleportrait and travel stories. Please take a moment to check out their interview below and to read on to learn more about the couple, their experiences, shooting process, and inspirations.

How did you two meet and start working together?

A&D: We met 7 years ago at an art gallery in Los Angeles. But we didn’t get together until Anaïs got back from a year in NYC studying photography at ICP.Anaïscontacted Dax to ask about freelancing and quickly got a job working for Norman Jean Roy. We both had demanding jobs and eventually wanted to start working on our own. The two of us decided to build images around food because it was what we were most connected to back then. Slowly we built our portfolio working weekends and looking at magazines, blogs and other websites for inspiration. Leaving our demanding jobs was a leap of faith. We planned a trip heading North out of California into Oregon, Washington and then to Montana, where Dax is from. The second leg of our trip took us to France where Anaïs is from. We rented a car and drove around the country finding inspiration in chefs, farmers and landscapes. The whole trip took three months and emptied our bank accounts, but we had our first portfolio as a result. In those three months, we worked together non-stop, sleeping in our car and living out of suitcases. Looking back, the trip was really romantic but it took a lot of trust in one another to pull it off.

When shooting a project, how do you two work with each other -- what is the structure of the shoot when working as a partnership?

A&D: Normally we take turns shooting, this allows the other to help art direct. We both shoot for each set up, unless we decide that we have the shot and move onto the next. We have built a complimentary dynamic which has been the foundation of our collaborative efforts.  We’re always side by side, but if under a time or budget constraint, we can divide and conquer by shooting separately at the same time on 2 different set ups. But this is the exception. Our favorite part about shooting together is the ability to have an even better dialog with the client, while keeping things moving with the talent. While one shoots, the other can be conferring with the creative team and client, allowing for ongoing communication.

You shoot a wide variety of work, what types of assignments are your favorite, and why?

A&D: Our work is about either connecting to real people that we find inspiring or creating a fictional story that is inspirational. The ability to tell a story whether it's real or produced is paramount to our work. We want the viewer to be immersed in our universe and be uplifted by it. Our cameras are a great excuse to get closer to the things and the people that we love. Photography for us is like sharing a good meal with friends, taking a beautiful hike in California, or meeting an inspiring chef or painter. Our favorite assignments are the ones that allow our imaginations to enter the shoot's concept, whether we’re selling a brand or photographing a creative person in their space.

You two shoot a mix of travel, food and lifestyle; what is your favorite out of all the places you have visited?Any crazy adventures or characters that you've encountered?

Anaïs: I would have to say California because it is so diverse and seems to be a place for endless inspiration. If the road could be considered a place, then the road would be my favorite, because it is part of my imagination as much as the destination that it takes me to. I was raised in Europe and I find that there is an openness and creative energy in the Western US. I enjoy the pioneering spirit and the idea of being an explorer. I live vicariously through the places we go and characters we meet. Sometimes I feel like a writer living my own novel as I explore the West and I am very attached to the place that today I call home, Los Angeles.

Dax: For me a favorite place stems from the stories and experiences that I have in certain locations. For example, we ventured to Bangkok last year and met a group of friends who we originally connected with through our instagram (anais_dax). The time spent and experiences shared (sharing a home made meal, wandering around) we all realized we had similar points of interests amongst eachother. We ended up spending several days together in Thailand laughing, eating, and exploring. As a result, a wonderful photoshoot came out of the connection. They all had such a great sense of style and their creative studio was drenched with natural light.

A&D: Our best project to date has to be our Kinfolk Ode to Summer shoot because we had a lot of 'firsts' on that job. It was the first time we got to work with our favorite producer, Adee Pelleg, who took care of us like a friend or a mother would. It was our first magazine cover ever! And it was the first time we got kicked out of our location for not having a permit. Which brings us to our best story: as Adee and Dax were trying to sweet talk the law officer into letting us finish our shoot, Anaïs was shooting what she didn’t know at the time what was going to be the next cover for Kinfolk. If you look at the photograph, you can see both Elaina and James (our models) laughing at the whole situation (bottom second image.) And after taking that photo Anaïs hid the memory card in her bra strap for fear we would get our gear confiscated. We then moved the whole crew to another location nearby to finish the shoot; everyone helped while laughing. We ended up getting some of our favorite portfolio images from this shoot.

To date you have been known as Young & Hungry, what prompted the name change to Anaïs & Dax

A&D: We loved Young & Hungry, it was a perfect fit when we started; it was catchy and it had a great sound.  But we’re not an agency, a brand or just a blog, we’re 2 photographers and our names are important. We want to stand next to our work, not behind the name, hence the change. We also think that the timing is right. We just signed with Apostrophe, created a new a new website, and are reaching a larger audience. We have been together for three years and have worked together for two. There’s a feeling of coming of age. Our work has grown and the name change is a reflection of that.

Change is obviously on the mind with the new name and the new agency, how do you see your business evolving over the next few years?

A&D: Now that our work has grown and reached more people, we can focus on producing our jobs, expanding our client list, and promoting ourselves. We’re starting to do more advertising and there are clients we’d definitely like to work with: Levi’s, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Apple, Patagonia, etc. We really appreciate their aesthetic and their strong, lifestyle imagery. In terms of editorial, there are so many great publications we’d like to work with: Bon Appetit, GQ, Travel & Leisure, Vogue, OutSide, LA Mag, etc. We’re also especially attached to working with more indie or limited edition magazines such as: Anthology, Smith Journal, Inventory, Gather, Port and Wilder.  These are the publications that are collected by our peers and the people that may hire us down the road.

Shot by Mitchell Feinberg, with models by Megan Caponetto, the photographs show team work at its best. To construct the iconic cover models, Megan created three separate resin numbers about 13 inches tall and gilded them in 18k gold. The next sculpture was created out of 413 solid brass balls that she ground, gilded, polished, and then glued together to make the final shape. The final 500 was imprinted in gold powder using a custom made plexi stamp. Well worth the effort for such stunning images!

Photographer Jessica Antola recently returned from Ethiopia, the pictures she took there are some of my favorites from her library.  Check out her travel portfolio to see more of the stunning images.  Here is a little info from Jessica about her trip.

"Ethiopia is a fascinating country, with over eighty different ethnic groups, with high mountains and low deserts in an area about the size of Texas and with fervent orthodox Christians and equally fervent Muslims (and numerous Animists thrown into the mix).  I loved driving on the rough roads through valleys and up mountains, observing the marvelous countryside and people, with their colorful, exotic and changing wardrobes and hairstyles. I was particularly excited to travel in the southwest of Ethiopia into the Omo Valley, where remote and small tribal groups have lived for centuries, undisturbed by modern society.  I felt fortunate to visit the Omo tribes, some with lip plates, body paint, scarification and wild hair styles, before the "civilizing effects" of new roads and hydroelectric projects take hold."

Meredith met rapper Lakutis on a recent film project, which she was shooting stills for. After their first collaboration she knew she wanted to work with him again and as luck would have it, he needed pictures to promote his upcoming SXSW appearances. They started the shoot at his house in Harlem using several different props that Meredith had brought, but she knew she really wanted to shoot him with his cat. The cat was thankfully pretty chill and posed for quite some time. This picture ended up being one of Meredith's favorites from the shoot.

The photo of the girl and the limo was an occasion of a number of elements coming together at an opportune moment. Meredith spotted the limo near a location shoot she was on. Thankfully the stylist had some animal inspired clothes on hand. At the end of the shoot there was a little extra time and she was able to get this picture at the magic hour when the light was golden and it makes the shot even better! Photographer Dan Saelinger was interviewed by Holly Hughes for a feature in PDN entitled "Lighting Recipe: Dan Saelinger's Sci- Fi Still Life."  Below is the beginning of the article, to read the piece in its entirety go to the PDN website.

Dan Saelinger is often asked to create conceptual still lifes that convey complex or far-out ideas. For a story in the health section of O, The Oprah Magazine, he was asked to illustrate the idea of using cloning to replace organ and muscle tissue as it ages. “It’s kind of a dark story for the magazine, so the challenge was making something beautiful out of it,” Saelinger says. Once the sketches were approved, Katherine Schad, the director of photography, and Photo Editor Melanie Chambers talked to Saelinger about how to bring the idea to life and “make it look realistic as a photograph, and not make it feel cheesy,” the photographer says. Though the final shot—showing four test tubes, three of which contain the same woman in different poses—required digital compositing, Saelinger’s lighting contributed to the illusion that the woman’s body was actually behind glass. © Photo District News/Nielsen

Apostrophe is thrilled to announce the addition of photographer Chris Buck to our roster! Chris has been with us just over a month, and we have used the last few weeks to get to know him and pull together web portfolios to showcase his expansive body of work. Chris agreed to be interviewed by Jenifer, Apostrophe's fabulous SF-based rep. Here's a bit of what they discussed below. Enjoy!

You have had a prolific career shooting people from all corners. Is there a famous public figure or celebrity that you have yet to photograph and would like to?

When I started in photography I was really interested in pop culture -- at the time movies and music. I still enjoy both, but now that I am older and more mature, my interests have shifted. My fantasy shoot is to photograph Margaret Thatcher -- the British Prime Minister from the 80s. I don't think it's likely to happen, she is older and in poor health, but I picture her looking well put together in a modest take out Fish & Chips shop in London.

It's not the first time that I’ve looked for sitters from previous generations, I reached out to Frank Sinatra and Irving Penn years ago. Frank's people sent me a form letter, but I received a hand-written response from Irving Penn - that was cool. Aging icons aside, I’ve gotten really excited about shooting cool pictures of regular people. I love to tell a great story that is engaging for both me and the audience.

Along the same vein, is there an illusive project that you would love to shoot, or any type of project that really excites you?

Early on I established a reputation for shooting editorial jobs, with one or two images running to illustrate a story. At a certain point I realized that in order to get larger commissions, I needed to show projects that are grander and have a greater scope. That mindset led to the development of projects like "All Fours," "ISN’T," and "Presence."

I’ve come to really enjoy telling these stories with a broader scope and multiple images, so an ambition of mine is to shoot a full issue of a magazine – perhaps including some of the advertising spots within that issue. It would be an amazing project to illustrate my vision across a full magazine. Similarly, it would be great to contract with a magazine for a year or two, working on a certain feature each month. This would be a lot of fun and allow me to provide a consistent voice for a magazine... Adding Chris Buckness to the chosen feature.

It is a challenge to stay relevant year in year out in this industry and yet you have been successful over many years. To what do you attribute this success?

I have never been worried about loosing interest, or getting bored with my work. If I could go back in time to the beginning of my career and see where I am now, I would be very happy with where I am at. However, I am not satisfied now, nor have I ever been at any point in my career. I suppose that’s how I stay relevant. I continuely move the goal posts forward, always propelling my photography forward. This keeps me excited and ambitious.

You shoot with an edginess and sense of humor that is second to none. What is it about your photography that makes it so unique?

There are many photographers that do odd, edgy or challenging work. I suppose I am different because I am a provocateur with a light touch. I am always looking for subjects that will be captivating and challenging. I try to shoot them in a way that is surprising for the viewer, without being pretentious or alienating. Ultimately, I want strange and surprising images, but I also want the audience to feel welcome.

Much of your work, but particularly your Euphemist promo, is an exposé on your life -- very personal. What is the motivation to provide so much of yourself to your audience?

I am a bit of a showman, which may be paradoxical for someone who has chosen a life behind the camera. I think that people, particularly public figures, who make themselves vulnerable are more interesting, and likable. In interviews, and even promotional pieces, I can be quite open and this allows me to connect with the people I work with, and vice versa. Plus, it’s more fun.

Can you tell me how the idea for "Presence" evolved and a bit more about the Foley Gallery Show?

In both my commercial and editorial projects, I am drawn to work that is a bit difficult and that expects something from the audience -- work that requires you to figure something out ultimately has a greater payoff. “Presence" is a series of celebrity portraits, which, on the surface, is unsatisfying. But if you stick around, it becomes richer, and quite interesting.

I originally planned "Presence" as a promo piece, aimed at top creatives, but soon realized that the project had legs and could possibly appeal to a larger audience. I’m very pleased that it has since become a book and a gallery show. Doing this series has been a revelation for me and has opened up many doors, in practical and creative ways.

What do you see on the horizon for Chris Buck? What is your next challenge to overcome?

My first love is to work on narrative and expansive stories with my advertising and editorial clients - this is where my heart is. But I am also interested in continuing to move into the gallery world. I have an ever-expanding list of ideas that I apply to my assignments, and the gallery world is providing another venue for me to execute these ideas. I am flexing a muscle that I haven't used before and that’s exciting.
